The Individual Service Program (ISP) is the heart of the Jarvie Commonweal Service®. It was central to James N. Jarvie’s vision and remains our core program today.

The ISP serves older adults in the New York City region. Once an individual has been accepted to the ISP, Jarvie makes a commitment to providing services and financial aid for the remainder of the person’s life as outlined in the agreement we enter into with each person we serve. As dictated by our charter, these are Protestant individuals referred to Jarvie by social work professionals, human service agencies, medical professionals, clergy, or others knowledgeable about Jarvie. See our Eligibility and Guidelines page for information on how recipients of our assistance, formally called “Beneficiaries,” are selected.

As has been the case since our founding, we provide ongoing comprehensive services and support to Individual Service Program recipients in a caring and personal way. Each individual works with a social worker, who typically visits the person in his or her home at least once a month and provides an ongoing supportive relationship and assistance in coordinating services to help meet their needs. Our social workers check on how our recipients are, ask what is good and not so good in their lives, and learn what they need and how we can help. Based on those conversations, we work with each person to create an individual service plan to address his or her needs, concerns, and interests.

We continually adapt our approach to providing service to capitalize on new approaches, technologies and innovations in the field. We can now access state-of-the-art information on gerontological social work issues from around the country and world, as well as the most current programs serving older adults. This flexibility enables us to better serve our Individual Service Program recipients, who are living longer and often face increasingly complex situations.

Our staff, composed of social workers, administrative professionals, and accountants, work collaboratively with our recipients, and as appropriate, their families and other agencies, to help sustain and improve recipients’ health, well-being, and quality of life. In addition, our student intern training unit provides additional help for Jarvie recipients, as well as giving social work students, occupational therapy, and other graduate-level students the opportunity to broaden their skills and their understanding.

We are dedicated to maintaining our involvement with our Individual Service Program recipients through all stages of their lives, no matter where in the greater New York City area they ultimately reside: whether in their own home, supportive housing, an assisted living facility, or a nursing home.
