Although Jarvie’s primary mission is to serve the recipients of our Individual Service Program, we serve the larger community by granting funds to other organizations working with older adults in the Greater New York City area. Our grant programs include:

  • The Grants to Organizations Program provides funding to a wide variety of agencies serving older adults in the Greater New York City area. Please click here for an important announcement about the temporary suspension of the Grants to Organizations program.

  •
  • The Emergency Grants Program assists individual older people with urgent financial needs (including the imminent threat of eviction and/or utility disconnection), as well as those with critical medical needs. Jarvie provides these primarily through nonprofit organizations, with occasional grants made directly to individuals. Please click here for an announcement of the temporary curtailment of the Emergency Grants program.
  • Jarvie in Action
Jarvie funds can solve crises and help older adults remain independent by . . .

    Preventing Eviction
Mr. DJ, 69, of Orange, NJ, was faced with a non-payment of rent eviction action.  He had fallen four months behind on the rent after he became ill and was hospitalized.  During his hospitalization he became confused and did not pay all of his bills.  After returning to his apartment, he attempted to speak with the manager about the rent due, but each time the manager was unavailable. He was not given any information about his account. A legal services organization used Jarvie grant funds to pay the $503 balance of the rent due that he could not provide from his own resources.

    Preventing a Utilities Shut-off
Ms. WW, 81, ran into financial difficulties after her husband, the family bill payer, was hospitalized and she became his caretaker.  She was stunned when a utility shut-off notice arrived.  This happened after their rent had been raised, and the couple needed assistance to stay afloat financially.  Mrs. W. contacted an adult day care center in Brooklyn in a panic. The center used $477.21 in Jarvie funds to solve the immediate problem of the utility bill, and helped her to develop a plan for ensuring that all of their bills were paid in a timely fashion going forward.
